It’s Gettin’ Hot in Here

The heat is on in Yankee Universe. Tampa Bay continues to breathe down the Bombers’ necks and sits just one game out of first. The good news is, however, that New York’s bats have begun to shake off the spring sluggishness as we head into summer.

Derek Jeter and A-Rod finally seem to be turning things around at the plate, but it’s not like any of the regulars have been hitting the cover off the ball. None of the starters is batting over .300, and Jorge Posada is absolutely languishing at .147.

Another silver lining has been┬áthe pitching – especially the surprise successes of Bartolo Colon, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia in the rotation behind CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett. The bullpen has also done well, particularly Joba Chamberlain who has looked good recently, and the incomparable Mariano Rivera who has 13 saves to his credit. This staff has kept the Yankees in first place.

Kansas City (tied for second in AL Central!) is visiting the Bronx for a three-game mid-week set. After dropping the first game to the Bombers on Tuesday, the Royals fell to 3-9 on the road. New York’s batterymates will have to keep a close eye on KC, which leads the majors with 44 stolen bases.

The Yankees play seven games against AL rivals beginning with hosting the Red Sox over the weekend before travelling to Tampa Bay and Baltimore for a pair of games in each city.
