Somebody stop me!! That’s from the Mask. The one that I wore tonight.

Angels had to be feeling confident after taking 2 of 3 from the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians. Next up was another AL Central foe, the last place Chicago White Sox. The White Sox, who will eventually win the Central, came in to Anaheim with the worst record in baseball at 13-23. The Halos had already swept 3 from the Sox less than a month ago, so this should be a walk in the park.
It was a walk, a continuing walk around the bases for the Sox, who slugged 3 homer runs on their way to an 8-0 win on Monday. Carlos Quentin hitting a home run, expected. Alexei Ramirez hitting a bomb, acceptable. Gordon Beckham going yard, come on now. Ervin Santana had his B-stuff as the Sox knocked him around.
One bit of news. The Angels lost right fielder Vernon Wells to a groin injury. I hate to pour salt on a wound, but how big of loss is it going to be? Wells has done next to nothing since putting on a Halos uniform, as his .183 average would attest. Reggie Willits was recalled to take Wells spot on the roster. Who knows, maybe Wells will rediscover his swing on the DL.
I feel horrible for saying something negative about Torii Hunter, but 12 double plays? That’s a seasons worth, not 6 weeks worth. Oh, I’ll explain. Hunter has hit in to 12 double plays so far this year. Astonishing, huh?
So I went to Tuesday’s Angels-Sox game and the weirdest thing happened. I decided to wear my Luche Libre mask to the game, and wouldn’t you know it, 40,000 people decided to do the same. Damn, bad timing on my part. It was wresting mask night, or get fans to think they will be in the Guinness Book of World Records night. In the 5th inning, we all donned our mask, kept it on our heads for 10 minutes, and then were told that we were part of the biggest mask wearing crowd in history. Hence, the GBOWR. Who comes up with these things? Are there 39,000 other people somewhere cursing us because we took their record?
Had a problem with he 7th inning stretch. The young girl, Amanda?, sang it wrong. It’s supposed to be, “For it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out….”, not, “because it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out”. I know that’s nitpicking, but that song has been around for generations. You’re right, from now on it’ll be, ” Oh say can you see, by the midmornings early light”. Why do I think that if I sang a little of Lady Gaga’s song, ‘Blackjack face’, people would be in an uproar over my lyrical misstep. I’m just saying.
I’m bouncing around tonight, deal with it. Good to see Rance Mulliniks in the house. Mulliniks, who most people wouldn’t know if he was standing next to them, played with the Angels from 1977-79. I remember that he had braces when he first came up with the club. That’s all I got on him, but it was nice that he came back to throw out the first pitch.
Still love the Angels open, with the Train song. It always makes me miss my friend Rory Markas (The former Angels announcer), who played such a big part in recent Angels history. You hear his voice throughout the video/audio montage. You went way to young, my friend.
Mark Trumbo had to be a happy guy, hitting in front of Jeff Mathis and all. He was intentionally walked twice, only to watch Mathis pop out to 2nd, and strike out. I know Trumbo was happy because that’s what Rex Hudler said on Angels talk. He said that Trumbo didn’t care about being walked, he’s just happy to be in the lineup. That may be true the first couple weeks, but at this point he expects to be in the lineup.Who do the Angels have to replace Trumbo in the lineup? He knows he’ll be playing every day.
I don’t mean to bag on Hudler, because you won’t meet a better person anywhere, but I gave up believing anything he said a few years ago. Why, you ask? Angels playing a day game, I want to say in Oakland. Routine fly ball hit to Steve Finley that clanked off his glove. Hudler says, “A ball like that can he very tricky to catch”. A ball hit to a near stationary former Gold Glove winner is tricky? Hitting it to me would be tricky, but I’m an idiot. Bottom line, Hudler’s credibility is lacking in my book.
Love the Angels aggressiveness, but sometimes you have to think before being aggressive. Alberto Callaspo singles to left fielder Juan Pierre, who comes up throwing. Now, we all know, Pierre has a weak throwing arm, so he has no chance of getting either of the two runners. Callaspo obviously doesn’t know this because he tries to take second, but is easily caught in a run down and tagged out. What did the Sox do? They cut off the ball around SS, instead of letting it take 40 bounces to home plate. I was stunned that he would try to take second–I think the majority of the crowd was as well.
Howard Kendrick is the consummate team player. He’s played 2nd, 3rd and 1st so far this year. Now add left field to his resume. Kendrick started in he outfield tonight, the first time he’s been pencilled in line up at the 7,8 or 9 positions since high school. He’s a fantasy owners dream because he now qualifies at 4 positions.
Maicer Izturis turned his ankle in the 8th inning Tuesday. I hope he’s all right, because he’s my 7 week, offensive MVP. He gets the most talent possible out of his body. That guy can flat out play. Wonder how Jose Guillen is doing in Washington–haha.
Angels took game 2, 6-2. Rubber game is tomorrow
What the hell is a Rubber game? I’ll assume it has nothing to do with condoms, or rain gear, so why do they call it that? The term originated in London back in 1559 during a lawn bowling contest. It is also used in card games, as well. Basically any series that has an odd number, like a 5 game series, the 5th and deciding game would be called the Rubber game. Lets go crazy. Angels-Dodgers play a 9 game series, they split the first 8 games. The 9th game would be called….come on….you know this….Yep, the Rubber game.
Talk to you tomorrow..
