A’s Catch a Lucky Break With the Weather

The rubber match between the A’s and Rangers was wednesday night, but a rain delay in the fourth eventually led to the games postponement. In other words, the A’s get a mulligan in an incredibly lucky turn of events. I’d be pretty upset if I was a Rangers fan. I’d be even more upset if I was Rangers first baseman, Mitch Moreland, who hit a grand slam in the game, the first of his career.
But if I were Gio Gonzalez, I’d be ecstatic. The usually reliable Gonzalez gave up 7 runs in just 2 2/3 innings. Ouch. He just didn’t have it that day. He couldn’t throw the fastball for strikes and his curveball didn’t have the bite that it usually had. The pitch Moreland crushed over the wall was a hanging breaking ball at the numbers.
Gio had a little fun with it though, apologizing to Moreland that the slam wouldn’t count. And that’s all he could do really. The A’s pitchers aren’t going to be perfect every time out, and they got lucky that this time didn’t count because I’d take Gio Gonzalez more often then not.
Bob Geren agrees with me “Today didn’t go as well as we’d like but with the rules of baseball, one team gets a break. I’m sure [Gio] will be better the next time out.”
There’s no date yet for the makeup game but it’ll probably be a double header next time the A’s go to Arlington, which will be a three game series starting July 8.
