A’s Get Bad News Regarding Braden’s Shoulder

Dallas Braden has been on the bench nursing his throwing shoulder since he couldn’t finish his April 16th start, and he’s going to have to wait a while longer to make his next.
The A’s announced that Braden will need surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder and there is now timetable for his return. David Altcheck, who was one of three to give an opinion on the injury, will perform the procedure on Monday.
This is a big blow to the A’s. Braden is a solid pitcher in his own right, but is also a huge help to the others on the staff. Gio Gonzalez especially looks up to Braden. “Not to ride the Dallas Braden banner,” Gonzalez recently stated, “but it’s always fun to have Dallas around. It kind of changes the momentum of the game. He’s a fighter.”
I’m no doctor, but, for my money, shoulder injuries are very worrisome for pitchers. This injury will certainly take him out for significant period and could easily keep him out the rest of the year.
Equally as important is the fact that the A’s are losing a lot of their depth, which was definitely a focus for Billy Beane in the offseason. Braden joins fellow starter, Rich Harden, on the DL lowering the list of reliable starters to 5, that is if you consider Tyson Ross a reliable starter.
Ross, the Oakland native, has been great in the early going and is more than capable of holding his own in a big league rotation. But there isn’t really an insurance plan if his numbers falter. I mean, he was the back up plan.
The A’s continue to sport the league’s best rotation, but it cannot afford to take another hit.
We all hope for the best for Braden, but his injury creates a question mark in the A’s strongest asset, their starting rotation. With Braden out, the need for offense becomes all the more important. But that’s a topic that deserves its own discussion… and that one won’t be positive.
Other Notes: The A’s optioned Jerry Blevins to AAA and called up Trystan Magnuson. Magnuson, acquired in the Rajai Davis trade, has impressed thus far in AAA and will look to make his Major League debut very soon.
