YPSILANTI, Mich. — It took awhile but the wait was worth it because the results made the Eastern Michigan University baseball fan smile.
Eastern Michigan University came back and defeated Central Michigan University Thursday night, May 19, 2011 in 14 innings 11-10 and when the sun comes up Friday morning, the Eagles wll be perched in first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division.
Eastern Michigan University center fielder Wally Gerbus scored the winning run with one out when catcher Kyle Peterson lifted a line drive into the night air and the ball fell in between the Chippewas outfielders.
Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander described the game as an exciting typical rival Mid-American Confeence baseball game with an edge of the seat excitement.
“This club is a no quite club we made a lot of mistakes that is uncharacteristic of a championship team,” Alexander said after the ballgame. “Our will to win and with our swagger these guys thank that they are still going to win.”
In the fifth inning the Eagles looked like that they were going to open up the ballgame by getting to Central Michigan University starting pitcher Trent Howard the Eagles scored five runs but the Eagle bullpen could not contain the Chippewas offenses and in the eighth inning Central Michigan University scored five runs and led the Eagles going into the ninth inning 8-6.
Eastern Michigan University offense fought the entire game and in the ninth inning scored two runs and sent the game into extra innings.
Leading the offense for the Eastern Michigan shortstop Tucker Rubino, he had four hits and three RBIs, the Eagles had 19 hits including six extra base hits, Eagles junior outfielder Brent Ohrman hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Alexander starting pitcher Robert Wendzicki once again showed that he is the Friday game guy, he worked seven innings giving up eight hits and four runs but he did not get a decision.
“I thought that he (Wendzicki) had a great outing and he should have won,” Alexander said about his starting pitcher performance. “He was outstanding and if I was him I would be ready to punch these guys in the mouth, this is like three or four time that they have done that to him, they go out and get the lead and he dose not get the decision.”
The bullpen struggled would be the kindest thing that Alexander could say about the relief pitching, Alexander used six pitchers from the pen.
“The bullpen was not there today that is the bottom line,” Alexander said about his relief pitchers. “They will get a chance tomorrow and Saturday because they will all have to comeback in so they are going to have to find away to throw strikes.”
Senior relief pitcher Tim Combs did do a good job in holding back the Chippewas offense, he worked three and two-thirds of an inning and struck out three but did not give up a base on balls and no hits.
Brian Valente faced five batters and recorded his fourth victory of the season for the Eagles.
“While I am having chest pains these guys are relaxed,” Alexander said about his team’s personality. “I have a pit in my stomach, I do not think I can eat for three days.”
The appetite for the Eastern Michigan University is not yet quenched and they should remain hungry until the end of the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament being played in Chillicothe, Ohio starting next Wednesday May 25, 2011 and continuing to Saturday May 28, 2011.
The plate for the Eagles will continue to be full as they complete the regular season Friday and Saturday afternoon against Central Michigan University May 20 and May 21,2011 at the coziest corner in the conference and the home of the Eagles Oestrike Stadium.
Friday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and Saturday afternoon’s game will be a chance for the Eagles to honor the seniors on the club and the first pitch is to cross the plate at 1 p.m.
