Survivor: Redemption Island hits the PGA Tour to start this week’s What It Means:
1) What a great story to see David Toms bounce back a week after his painful playoff loss at The Players and take charge on the back nine on Sunday to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. It started with the hole out from the fairway on 11 for eagle, the timely pars on 12 and 13 and extremely clutch birdie on 14 to get enough of a lead to hold off Charlie Wi.
Now Carter Toms can really be a happy 13-year-old. Welcome back to the winner’s circle David Toms. Who knows, maybe he can win another PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club come August.
2) Rickie Fowler will get there. Eventually. They have an expression in golf that I’ve used in this space before — Winning Breeds Winning. That’ll happen for Rickie Fowler. Step number one is the hardest part, however: getting your first W. This week was a T-16 finish for Fowler, who was hot on Thursday but never regained that spot on form.
He continues to be a fan favorite and just needs to put together four rounds in a row at the right time. It’ll happen, I continue to believe it.
3) Ian Poulter won the Volvo World Match Play Championship on the European Tour today. Ian Poulter loves match play. He does great in Ryder Cups. He produces very respectable results at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. But he never seems to win a stroke play event.
It’s an interesting quandary, one that doesn’t seem to have an answer at the moment. He’s an extremely talented player who could probably win a couple major championships. But for some reason, he only seems to rise to the top in the match play format.
