Philadelphia Phillies: Top 10 Prospects to Get Excited About

Philadelphia Phillies: Top 10 Prospects to Get Excited About

Some think it’s still too early to call up Domonic Brown.

My question: Why is calling him up a bad thing?

To me, if he has all of the tools, he’ll take this particular opportunity and run with it.

There’s no question that he can swing the stick.  He’s done nothing but mash the baseball at the minor-league level.

He’s yet to overcome the psychological hurdle of the big leagues.  He’s found success at every level but the big one.

It looks like Charlie Manuel will bat Brown in the seven-hole like he did last night.

We’ll find out what his mental makeup is all about in the coming months.  I think he’ll be fine.

10. Jonathan Pettibone/David Buchanan/Julio Rodriguez/Jesse Biddle

Pettibone-phillies_display_image

Jonathan Pettibone currently has the lowest ERA (1.98) in the farm system. David Buchanan (2.21) is second.

Neither starter is overpowering, although Pettibone is 6’5”.

Julio Rodriguez of Single-A Clearwater has been consistent.  In 44.1 innings pitched, Rodriguez is 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.  He’s struck out 39 and walked 17.

Local first-round pick Jesse Biddle has struggled with his control thus far.

9. Domingo Santana

Domingosantana1_display_image_display_image

Domingo Santana is an 18-year-old outfielder for the Single-A Lakewood Blue Claws.

His current slash line is .270/.313/.460.  He’s hit five home runs with 13 RBI.

He needs to improve his strikeout rate.  He’s currently struck out in 48-of-126 at-bats.

Santana struggled mightily a year ago in Lakewood and Williamsport, but he’s come out much better this season.

8. Sebastian Valle

06d-05-sebastian20valle_display_image

During Carlos Ruiz’s recent stint in Clearwater, Chooch took the young Valle under his wing and gave him a few pointers about the position.

Defense will be the key if Valle wants to be the starting catcher for the big club once Ruiz departs.  He had 12 passed balls in 2010 and 11 in 2009.

His throwing arm is strong—he has a 33-percent caught-stealing rate.

Valle’s known for his bat.  He’s currently hitting .333 in the Florida State League for Clearwater.

His bat is certainly big-league caliber, but will his defense be?

7. Trevor May

May1a_display_image

When Trevor May has his control, he’s dominant.

He has 61 strikeouts so far in 48 innings pitched this season.

But he’s also walked 23, something he must fix.

May features a big curveball and low-to-mid-90s fastball.  He has some of the best stuff in the farm system, if he can control it.

6. J.C. Ramirez

Many were calling the Cliff Lee deal one-sided in favor of the Mariners, but Phillippe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez (two of the three involved in the trade) are having spectacular seasons so far.

Ramirez lost last night’s start to move to 5-3.  He went eight innings while giving up three earned runs on six hits.  He struck out six.

The numbers across the board look great so far: 5-3, 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 48 innings pitched.  He’s only struck out 19.

He has a low-90s fastball with a changeup and curveball.

5. Phillippe Aumont

If and when Ryan Madson becomes the full-time closer once Brad Lidge leaves, someone is going to have to take his setup role.

Phillippe Aumont may be that guy down the line for the Phillies.

Considered the crown jewel in the Cliff Lee deal, the 6’7” flamethrower has 28 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched with a 3.00 ERA and a .86 WHIP so far.  He’s walked just five.

4. Jonathan Singleton

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 25: 'Aflac All-American' Jonathan Singleton stands on the field before the interleague game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox at Dodger Stadium on June 25, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers defeat

Jonathan Singleton was spectacular last season for Clearwater.  He hit .290 with 14 home runs and 77 RBI.

This past Saturday, Singleton got himself out of a 5-for-37 slump by going 3-for-5.  He hit his first home run in over a month.

The 19-year-old is hitting .267 with two home runs and 15 RBI.

He’s making the transition from first base to left field.

3. Brody Colvin

Brody-colvin_display_image

Brody Colvin has been slowed by a back injury.

The Clearwater 20-year-old has made just three starts this season.  This includes last night’s epic 23-inning, five-hour, 37-minute marathon against Jupiter.  The Threshers fell, 2-1.

Colvin went six innings while allowing an earned run on four hits.  He struck out three.

He’s a power starter with a solid, moving mid-90s fastball.  His command and control will improve as the years go by and his secondary pitches improve.

Colvin has the potential to be a front-of-the-rotation starter.

2. Jarred Cosart

Jarredcosart_display_image

Jarred Cosart has yet to last a full season in two years at the minor-league level due to arm troubles.

He didn’t throw more than six innings in each of his first seven starts this year.

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old looks solid and has gone deeper into games in his last few starts.

He’s considered to have the best arm in the system.  He’s normally in the mid-90s, but can hit 98 mph.  He’s in the process of improving his breaking pitch and changeup.

Cosart has ace potential.

1. Domonic Brown

Here’s the question that I have to pose once Shane Victorino comes back.

Who do they send down?

It sounds like Dominic Brown is in for the long haul.

As for Brown, we know about all the tools.  It’s now time for him to showcase them. Let’s see what the kid’s got!

I currently work for the Sports Network. It's the best job ever! I am a 2010 graduate of Temple University where I majored in broadcast journalism, I LOVE SPORTS! That's why I am here. I have a vast knowledge and want to share my athletic intelligence with the world. Some people like to spend their time shooting down aliens in Halo; I like to spend my time watching sports, current and old. It's my passion! I got asked one time how I can watch a game over again when I already know the outcome. 5 minutes later, he's watching Happy Gilmore reciting all of the lines from the movie. Hypocrite! As for my favorite sports teams, I've been a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan. My favorite athlete is Allen Iverson. He didn't like practice that much, but when it came to gametime, no one let it all out on the floor like Iverson. He is absolutely beloved in the city of Brotherly Love. For college athletics, obviously I pay close attention to Temple. (Yes, football too) Even before I stepped foot on Temple's campus for the 1st time in 2005, I was a fan. Oh the good old days of John Chaney! Some other tidbits about myself, I love cheesesteaks, I hydrate myself with Welch's Grape Juice and Snapple. I love the HBO show Entourage. Also, when is Kenny Powers making his much anticipated return in Eastbound and Down!

Agree Brown should stay and learn how to hit MLB pitching but not if he will become a bench player. At this point you either have to let him get the MLB at-bats and learn how to hit MLB pitching or actually retard his progress. You’re right though, barring a trade involving one of the OF, they will have a decision to make when Victorino returns. Maybe Baez?

I think Brown starts in right against righties, and Francisco will start against lefties.

When Victorino gets back, I think Mayberry might get sent down.

Well I dunno… Mayberry seems to have more value than Francisco because hecaplay more positions and I guess they are essentially the same player. Victorino is once again the only constant in the OF so Ibanez, Victorino and Brown/Mayberry… fine for regular season with Utley back but would you head into the playoffs with that lineup?

We’ll see what happens with Michael Martinez because he’s the one I want gone, but he’s got the whole Rule 5 thing that makes things complicated.

I’d go with Francisco over Mayberry due to the experience factor in the playoffs.

Martinez is versatile though, he can play the infield and outfield so they may want to keep him for his defensive versatility; but he hurts the lineup.

Mayberry looks good in CF to me.
