Bats leading the way for Royals
Posted By Ryan Riordan On May 25 2011 @ 3:06 pm In Kansas City Royals | No Comments
Heading into Wednesday’s slate of games, the Royals 12th out of 14 teams in the American League in ERA, 11th in quality starts and 13th in both strikeouts and batting average against.
Meanwhile, at the plate, Kansas City ranked 11th in home runs. So how exactly were the Royals being outscored by just 12 runs this season and sit just 3.5 games out of the wild card entering Wednesday?
It’s likely due to the fact that while the Royals don’t hit home runs, they are able to get around the bases.
Despite the lack of homers, Kansas City was second in all of baseball in extra-base hits thanks to leading the MLB in both doubles and triples.
And when the Royals aren’t hitting two- and three-baggers, they are turning singles and walks into doubles and triples, as they also lead baseball with 51 steals.
Once players are getting to third, Kansas City is able to drive them home in numerous ways, including sacrifice flies, which the Royals lead MLB in with 21.
So, despite not hitting the ball out of the park on a regular basis, the Royals are sixth in the American League and 10th in the MLB in runs scored due to their ability to score in many different ways.
And they better keep scoring, because other than Danny Duffy (who I have been completely wrong on so far ), there aren’t too many bright spots in the starting rotation at the moment.
