Sweepless in Seattle

The bullpen staff should be buying CC Sabathia dinner because his eight-inning, five-hit performance on Sunday spared them and the Yankees from being swept in Seattle and falling further behind the AL East-leading Red Sox.

Heading into Monday, Boston had a one-game lead on New York, with Tampa half a game out of second.

New York lost to the Mariners in 12 innings on Saturday night/early Sunday morning in a painful, 4+ hour affair. Mariano Rivera blew the game when Adam Kennedy coaxed an RBI single to plate the winning run. The Bombers fell 4-3 on Friday in another tight game. In both losses, the Yankees lost the lead and failed to come back against the M’s bullpen.

The Yankees close out their West Coast trip with three each in Oakland and Anaheim before June heats up in the Bronx. Boston, Cleveland and Texas come to town during a 10-game Bombers homestand.
