Burrows Giant Bruin Killer

Alex Burrows scored: 11 seconds into overtime as Vancouver beat Boston 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup final.   Burrows had 2 goals and 1 assist in the game.  Burrows who potentially could have suspended for tonight’s game for biting Patrice Bergeron had his best game of the playoffs, much to Boston’s chagrin.

Boston came out with a more determined effort early in the first period as they carried the play.  As the period went along Vancouver picked up the hitting and gradually started to get the better of the chances.  Vancouver got the only power play of the first period and they scored the only goal of the first period.    Zedeno Charo took a needless interference penalty and once again special teams play a major factor.  Boston defensemen Andrew Ference failed to clear the puck and that resulted in Alex Burrows snapping the puck past Tim Thomas.  Alex Burrows was probably the last person that Boston wanted to score as they still feel he should have been suspended for biting Patrice Bergeron in game 1.

Boston got the first power play of the second period and Boston’s best chance came from Mark Recchi but Luongo was there to make a big save and once again Boston failed to score on the power play and they are 0-7 in the series.   Boston finally scored their first goal of the series as Milan Lucik tapped in a rebound as Boston tied the game 1-1.   After Boston scored their play picked up and they started spending more time in the Vancouver end and getting more chances and that resulted in Boston scoring their first power play of the series.   Chara’s shot from the point was deflected by Mark Recchi and Boston had their first lead of the series 2-1.   Tim Thomas makes big save off Jannik Hansen on a 2 on 1 and preserved the lead and that is how the second period ended.

Vancouver gets the first power play of the third period, but was ineffective and they got no shots on goal.   The Sedin twins have been no factor in this game up until about half way through the third period.  Alex Burrows past the puck to an uncovered Daniel Sedin and he beat Thomas to tie the score at 2-2.   After the tying goal Vancouver had a couple of odd man rushes but could not beat Thomas to take the lead and so the third period ended 2-2 and the game will have to be decided in overtime.

Overtime lasted all of :11 as Alex Burrows scored his second goal of the game on a wrap around play and Vancouver won the game 3-2 and are now only two wins away from winning their first Stanley Cup.   Game 3 is on Monday in Boston where it will be a must win game for the Bruins.

Notes:   Dan Hamhuis did not play…Manny Malhorta played his first game of the playoffs.
