2011 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Breakdown

The defensive unit for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was one to be feared for over a decade. With players such as John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and Simeon Rice giving offensive coordinators many sleepless nights, our recent defense has been more like NyQuil than anything. With the past two drafts it is obvious that we are trying to go back to our old ways.

DL- Last year we added two Defensive Tackles with our first two picks. Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma and Brian Price from UCLA. Gerald McCoy took some time to get used to the speed of the game but turned it up later in the season before getting injured. In rotation with Price and Roy Miller, they seem like a good unit for several years. This year we added two Defensive Ends with our first two picks as well. Adrian Clayborn from Iowa and De’Quan Bowers from Clemson. Bowers, in my opinion a top 5 talent,  had offseason knee surgery; and skeptics caused him to fall all the way to the 51st pick. Clayborn looks like a monster on tape and combined with the Bowers, Price, McCoy, and Miller, watch out.

LB- Free agency really has our Linebacking corps up in the air. Barrett Rudd has been a dominant middle lineback and team captain for several seasons. He will come with a heavy price tag so we will see what management decides to do with him, I don’t think he will be back. Quincy Black will also potentially be a free agent, and we can upgrade him for around the same price. Rookie Mason Foster make see some playing time as a rookie, but i don’t see him making a huge impact until year two. Geno Hayes, a very underrated tackler, needs to be a little bit more disciplined. He has a tendency to overrun plays. If he can change that, we have ourselves a very good linebacker for several years ahead.

DB-  I would’ve said this could be our strong suit, but Aqib Talib screwed that up. A top 5 Corner in the league, he had multiple run ins with the law and was just recently indicted on assault charges. He may go to jail and will almost definitely be suspended. 7th round draft pick Cody Grimm looked good before getting placed on the IR. Tanard Jackson will be back from his year long suspension. Veteran CB Ronde Barber will be back for what looks like his final season. EJ Biggers and Myron Lewis look to battle for the 3rd corner spot. With the type of passing offenses that are in the NFC South,  we will add to this postion through free agency. With such names as Nnamdi Asomugha and Champ Bailey looking for new homes, look for us to give out a big contract here.
