What Should The Padres Do?

Posted By Kevin Kelly On Jun 5 2011 @ 9:53 pm In San Diego Padres | 5 Comments

It is June 5th and the Padres record is 26-33 at the time of this article.  They are 7 games back in the National League West and 7 games back in the National League Wild Card standings.   What should the Padres do?

The Padres have shown some recent improvement in their play, their record over the last 10 games is 7-3.  They are currently on an 11 game home stand against the Houston Astros and are 2-1 so far and are leading the Astros today in the 7th inning, so assuming they maintain their lead they would win the series against the Astros 3-1.  This is of course against the Houston Astros who have a less than outstanding record of 26-33, they are 12 games back in the National League Central Division, dead last in the division with a winning percentage of .390, not exactly the favorites for representing the National League in the World Series.   What should the Padres do?

What chance do the Padres have at winning the National League West or the National League Wild Card, in this writer’s opinion the same chance as it snowing in San Diego?   They have to climb over 5 teams in the National League West and it is an even more daunting challenge as far as the Wild Card standings go, as they would have to pass 9 teams to claim the wild card, not exactly something you would bet your life savings on happening.   What do the Padres do?

Is it too early for the Padres to wave the white flag, do they themselves really believe they have a chance to make the playoffs.   Publicly they have to continue to believe that they can turn this around to give the fans hope, but privately I can’t believe they really feel they have a chance to win with this lineup.   What do the Padres do?

What the Padres do is what most small market teams do 3 months into the season, get ready to unload their better, higher priced players to get prospects for the future and start the whole process over next year.  As the trading deadline approaches look for closer Heath Bell and Ryan Ludwig to be offered as trading bait.  Sorry Padres fans, but that is your reality for 2011.
