Hammel Not Getting Enough Support from Rockies

Jason Hammel has been on the wrong side of a good pitching performance lately. Dating back to May 20th Hammel has pitched very well in 3 of his 4 starts. In those 3 starts, Hammel has gone at least 6 2/3 innings and given up a combined 6 runs, 2 of which were unearned.
The first of those 3 starts was on May 20th against the Milwaukee Brewers. Hammel was not spectacular, but he put the Rockies in a position to win. He went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out one. Those are not great numbers, but he left the game with a 4-3 lead. The lead would vanish with one swing of the bat from Brewers 3B Casey McGehee. McGehee hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th inning off Rafael Betancourt. The Rockies eventually lost the game in 14 innings after a Prince Fielder walk-off home run.
The second of Hammel’s starts came against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This time Hammel pitched very well, going 7 IP while giving up 0 earned runs. Unfortunately for Hammel, the D-Backs scored 2 unearned runs in the 6thproviding all the offense they would need in a 2-1 victory over Colorado at Coors Field on May 25th.
Hammel had a rough outing in Los Angeles at the end of May only to come back even stronger against the defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Hammel did not give up a hit until there were two outs in the 6th inning. At the time he was hanging on to a 1-0 lead. Eventually he would give up a run in that same inning, leaving the score deadlocked at 1. Hammel lasted 7 innings and only gave up 2 hits. He would leave with the score tied at 1 and the Rockies would lose the game 2-1. Colorado only managed 4 hits off of the Giants, thanks in large part to a strong outing from Ryan Voglesong.
At the end of the day, the Rockies sit in 4th place in the NL West and are in danger of dropping to last with their series in San Diego this week. As for Hammel, he is still searching for his first win since April…
