Diamondbacks Avoid Sweep In Extra Innings

The Giants came to Arizona to take a commanding lead in the NL West but only were able to take 2 out of 3 games from the Diamondbacks.

Justin Upton's home run in the 10th Inning gave the D'Backs the 3-2 win Thursday.

The Giants won the first two games and looked to steal away the third game in extra innings but Justin Upton had other plans.  Upton hit a solo blast in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 win and keep the Diamondbacks only 1.5 games behind first place.

The Giants were very strong the first two games.  On Tuesday, Giants’ closer Brian Wilson was able to shut the door with only a one run lead.  On Wednesday, Wilson was able to do the same with a 3 run lead.

Ian Kennedy pitched a gem in game 3 on Thursday pitching 8 innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 run.  Chris Young helped out by knocking out a 2 run blast in the 4th inning.  It wasn’t enough to give Kennedy the win as J.J. Putz collapsed in the 9th allowing one run to take the game into extra innings.  Luckily Upton came to the rescue to give David Hernandez the win in the 10th inning.

Yes the Giants won the series but the key for the Diamondbacks was to avoid the sweep.  A sweep can do a lot for momentum in terms of a division race.  Standing up to the Giants on Thursday night was key in making a statement that the division race is not over.  That being said, the Diamondbacks still have a long way to go before knocking the Giants off their NL West throne.

If the Diamondbacks want to compete for the playoffs they will need to fare better against the Giants in the remaining 3 series.  The Giants appear to be wounded without Buster Posey but they cannot be counted out, as they are still the favorite in the NL West.  If the Diamondbacks want to stay competitive they must add another starting arm to keep games close with the Giants.  A lot of runs will not be needed against the Giants as we saw this week.  However, strong performances from the starting rotation will be key down the stretch.

Daniel Hudson will look to get a win tonight against his former team the White Sox

Tonight the Diamondbacks face off against the Chicago White Sox in interleague play.   Daniel Hudson will get the start for the Diamondbacks against his former team and Edwin Jackson for the White Sox will start against his former team.  A year ago the Diamondbacks made a trade with the White Sox.  The Diamondbacks sent Edwin Jackson to the White Sox in exchange for Daniel Hudson and David Holmberg.

Coming Soon:  Stay tuned this Sunday for an analysis of the Diamondbacks-White Sox series as well as a few arms the Diamondbacks could trade for before the trade deadline.
