Braves head West

After their sweep of the Jays, Atlanta heads back to the West Coast for the third time this season. They’ll sit out the latest round of interleague games with a tilt with the Padres before heading to the Mariners. Atlanta now sits 4 and a half behind the Phils and is a few games ahead in the race for the wild card. Pitching was the main story in the Jays series. Brandon Beachy struck out 11 yesterday. It was his first game back from the DL. The other injury reports continue to look better. Tommy Hanson should be able to go against the Mariners, probably on Tuesday. Now that the injury situation is looking better, Atlanta should be primed to make a significant run. It would help in the Phils lose a few games, but they have Boston next week, so maybe that will happen. Atlanta’s getting good pitching. It’s the bats turn to take up the slack. Dan Uggla is hitting .177, but he’s socked 10 homers, second on the team. Brian McCann is first, and he clubbed Jays pitching during this stretch. Heyward is rounding into shape. Freddy Freeman will be back soon. All in all, the signs are there.
In other news, the Hawks have a draft party tonight, not that many people cared. They have the 48th selection, which is akin to being forced to shop in the bargain bin of Marshall’s. That’s barring a trade, but I don’t see it happening.
The NHL ratified the Thrashers’ exodus to Canada. (New Motto: Atlanta: Providing excellent Hockey to Canada for over thirty years). True North Entertainment has told everyone, and I mean everyone, with the Thrasher operation that they will not be needed. (That’ll do a lot for Atlanta’s unemployment rate). I know they have their own organization and such, but this firebombing of personnel will leave a very sour taste in everyone’s mouth. I doubt the NHL will ever come back, and I think it’s a long shot that the AHL or IHL will make a return leg at all. And, when the final vote came down at the owner’s meeting, where was Atlanta Spirit rep and co-owner Bruce Levenson? Out of the country on business. That’s just perfect. A wonderful coda on a disappointing stay. It’s just fitting, and tells miles about the real thoughts and attitudes of everyone involved.
