Dodgers G-wynn, denying Angels a sweep

The Dodgers have won the World Series! That’s how they acted after Tony Gwynn’s single gave the Dodgers a walk off 3-2 win in the finale of the 3 game series at Chavez Ravine. I love enthusiasm, but I have always been told that you don’t ever want to embarrass the opponent. Isn’t mobbing each other after a meaningless June game doing just that? I remember when Garret Anderson had 10 RBI against the Yankees a few years ago, he wouldn’t even crack a smile. I guess they do things different nowadays.

[2]It was a great pitchers game today. Jered Weaver and Clayton Kershaw are two of baseballs best. Kershaw actually pitched a complete game, as the Dodgers beat the Angels at Dodger stadium for the first time in more than 2 years. [3]

Giving Tony Gwynn credit for a triple in the 7th inning is a joke. Vernon Wells is a 3-time gold Glove winner, and the ball hit his glove. He should have made that catch. Wells had a fine series, including a go ahead home run in the 9th inning on Sunday, but that drop was huge. Maybe it’s just me, but could he show a little emotion? Does he have any fire in his belly? I don’t need him breaking water coolers, but a little sign that he cares would be nice. [4]

When Jordan Walden is on, he is unhittable, but when he is off even a bit, he can look real bad. Today was one of those days. He looked like he hadn’t thrown a ball in a month. I always wonder how guys can look so different each time they pitch.

Maybe the American League West isn’t that good. It seem like the Halos have had a number of tough stretches, but when I check the standings it shows the Halos only 2 games back of Texas.

The difference in the series. The Angels went 8-19 with runners in scoring position, while the Dodgers went 6-23. The Angels are one of the worst teams in getting runners across the plate, so that is a surprising stat.

The attendance was announced at more than 43-thousand, but Dodger stadium looked as empty as I have ever seen it. I used to make fun of Dodger fans who would pack the stadium to watch a mediocre team. It’s good to see them figure out that the management will not spend money if you support the product regardless of how they perform. Angel fans know that. Most of them won’t show if the team has one bad year.

I wouldn’t say that Jeff Mathis had the best series, but he sure is good at blocking the plate. I wonder where he learned to do that?

Next up for the Halos is the Washington Nationals. Not since the Texas Rangers in the late 70′s has a team gone through 3 managers so quickly. The Nats will introduce their 3rd field general tomorrow when Davey Johnson takes over. Johnson takes over for John McLaren, who took over for Jim Riggleman last Friday. Should be exciting.

Go Angels!!
