PGA TOUR WHAT IT MEANS: Hartford — June 26, 2011

A new PGA Tour winner starts this week’s What It Means:

1) Fredrik Jacobson won the Travelers Championship in Hartford today. He used a clutch par putt at 17 and a timely missed par putt by Ryan Moore on 18 to seal his first PGA Tour victory after 188 tries by one shot.

What do I think about Jacobson going forward? Well, he’ll be one of those guys that you see on a leaderboard now and then, and do some good things in the Ryder Cup, but to be frank, I don’t see him as a higher class golfer who can win majors. You’ll see him contending from time to time, however.

2) What a fantastic story on the Nationwide Tour today, with Erik Compton winning the Mexico Open. The two-time heart transplant recipient has been on a consistent climb towards the big leagues in recent years and with this victory he has almost assuredly locked up his PGA Tour card for 2012.

What an awesome development for a great guy, and if he could win a PGA Tour event, that might be the greatest victory you ever see.

3) I really like Rory McIlroy’s decision to not play any golf between the US and British Opens. Champions have to do a ton of media after a big victory like the US Open, and between that, the celebrations, and all the energy expended to win the tournament, letdowns usually occur. By not playing any golf between last week and the British, hopefully Rory can recharge his batteries enough to contend at Royal St. George’s.

And the way he’s playing right now, I wouldn’t doubt it one bit.
