I thought about wrapping up the Braves-Padres series, but decided a preview of the tilt between the Braves and the Mariners seemed more pressing, especially since the first game of the series goes at 10p EST and I have to get up for work at 5:30a. It’s all about priorities. But, let’s give a small synopsis of the Pads. The Braves only won one, Saturday, in a 10-1 slugfest, but yesterday Tim Hudson pitched great, but only got one run. Jonny Ventners blew a save (only his second) in a 4-1 defeat. Dan Uggla got his average up to .180 by going 2-3, but it dropped to .177 with an 0-4. Okay, that’s out of the way.
If anybody can sympathize with Atlanta, it’s Seattle. The M’s can pitch, they just can’t hit. They’re second in the AL in ERA, but the batting average is way at the bottom. (It’s .228 – Ugh) Felix Hernandez is 8-6 with a 3.19 ERA. Chone Figgins is having an Uggla-type year, with an .188 average. Atlanta will send Beachy tonight, Tommy Hanson (in his first start back from the DL) tomorrow, and Derek Lowe will go against Hernandez. This might be a series where we could see a no-hitter. Remember, you read it here first. Atlanta heads into the tilt five games behind Philly in the NL East, and a slim game over Arizona for the wild card. This could be the opportunity to pick up some games, but I said that about the SD series as well.
In the New York Times Sunday Magazine, there was a feature article by Michael Sokolove about Derek Jeter’s troubles. I’m not one to pile on, but his essential point is you can’t stop the aging process, and that’s what’s going on, even thought nobody will admit it. (Cause it means we’re growing old, and we don’t like that). Here’s the other lesson. Once you hit thirty as a hitter, retire. You’re done. Toast. Just like an NFL running back. Get into the broadcast booth. That’s a pretty cold reality. It’s no wonder nobody wants to acknowledge it.
