Padres Playing Better As They Win Series Against Braves

The San Diego Padres look like a team competing to make it to the World Series lately, not a team in last place 10.5 games back with a .430 winning percentage. They went into Boston and took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox and then this weekend they took 2 of 3 from the Atlanta Braves in Petco Park and even got some run production, could San Diego be turning their season around just before the all star break, who knew.
On Friday the San Diego offense exploded for 11 runs and hammered the Atlanta Braves 11-2 in front of only 27,000 home town fans. San Diego broke a close game wide open scoring three runs in the sixth inning and followed that up with scoring six more runs in the seventh inning, the fans at Petco Park must have thought they had died and gone to heaven as this was the most runs scored at home this season by the offensive challenged Padres. Tim Stauffer finally got some run support and had a career-high nine strikeouts over seven innings, Stauffer came into the game getting the worst run support in all of baseball, an average of 2.15 when he was on the mound. In Stauffer’s previous two starts the Padres had a grand total of 0 runs.
I guess it is feast or famine for the Padres, Friday night they scored eleven runs, Saturday day night they could only manage one run as they were rolled 10-1 by the Atlanta Braves. San Diego could only manage four hits on the night as Atlanta pitcher Jair Jurrjens became the first pitcher in the National League to win 10 games. The Braves got one run in both the first and second innings, and blew the game wide open by scoring a total of seven runs in the final two innings as the 38,000 Petco Park fans went home disgusted with the Padres. San Diego got there only run of the night in the third inning when Alberto Gonzalez homered; it was his first home run since 2009.
San Diego got back on track on Sunday afternoon when they scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to defeat Atlanta 4-1 and won the series against the Braves. San Diego scored all four runs with two out in the bottom of the eighth, as they received some timely hitting, something they have been sorely lacking this season. Jason Bartlett got an infield single to drive in a run to tie the score at one, and Orlando got in the act with a two run single and finally Chase Headley’s RBI single sealed the Padres come from behind win and sent home the Petco Park fans happy, however, it was not exactly full as only 24,000 fans took the time to show up at the park on a beautiful sunny afternoon in America’s finest city. San Diego will hope to win their third consecutive series when they host the Kansas City Royals for three games, Kansas City’s record over the last 10 games is an unimpressive 3-7.
