A stud running back, a guy who will shoulder the offensive load and carry his team to a championship, is rare to find in today’s NFL. How many guys are that to their team currently in the NFL? Adrian Peterson? Arian Foster? Chris Johnson? Maurice Jones-Drew? Of those guys, the top rushers in the NFL, how many of them were in the playoffs? zero, zip, zilch. Bottom line is that teams with a backup, inefficient, running back can win the Super Bowl (Packers, Brandon Jackson). The name of the game is the quarterback play. Luckily for the Indianapolis Colts the team has one of the best in the business.
However, despite a great quarterback, having an absolutely ineffective running game can bring a team down faster than almost anything. Colts fans experienced that last season, with the injury bug hitting the running game as hard as almost anywhere but the defensive secondary. The lack of running game exposed a porous offensive line.
