Blue Bombers get first win, on the road!

What a day to celebrate Canada day for Bomber fans, with a 24-16 win over a divisonal rival in the hammer.

Well it wasn’t a pretty win for the Bombers but it was a win none the less. Thanks mostly to the outstanding defence, and the play of Alex Suber.

The first half of the game was a bit frustrating as the Bombers offence seemed to sputter. As the Ti-Cats drove the field and scored a FG and then got a blocked punt which Glenn turned into a quick six with a strike to Mann.

The Bombers special teams came back at the Ti-Cats with nice run from Floyd who gave the offence real nice field posistion. On second down Pierce answered alot of questions with a 49 yeard strike to Edwards for 6. Easily the highlight of the night for the offence

In the second quarter the defence really showed what they are made of this year with Ti-cats in the red zone threating to score the defence managed to hold them to only a FG.

The first half would end with a Ti-Cat FG and a Bomber safety making the score 16-9.

In the third quarter the defence stood out again with a interception from Lobendahn who ripped the ball out from the Ti-Cat reciever. On the ensuing Bomber drive a scary moment when Pierce got rocked hard and every Bomber fan held their breath but luckily Pierce got up and shook it off. Bombers would get a 39 yeard FG from Palardy.

The defence was all in this game, with 13 minutes left in the game Suber picked off a pass from Glenn to Stala and took it to the house, giving the bombers the lead.

The Ti-Cats would intercept a pass from pierce to Watson which can only be described as an odd play, but the Bombers defence would take the ball right back as Glenn threw a pick to Logan and the Bombers would capitalize with a 34 yard FG from Palardy.

Bombers defence chased Glenn out and in came Porter, who did not fair much better against a hungry defence.

In the end the Bombers defence was too much for the Ti-Cats, and the turnover battle was won by the Bombers which in cfl is always a big factor.

It’s not time to start the parade route, but this has got to be a big hurdle for coach LaPolice getting the first win of the season out of the way, and also getting his first win on the road as a head coach in the Canadian Football League.

The defence played hard and aggressive, especially the play of Suber who had the tough task of covering Bruce which is never easy. Suber however was up to the challenge and deserves defensive player of the week for his performance.

The offence struggled, other then the TD pass from Pierce to Edwards there wasn’t much to brag about. Offence needs to catch up to the defence real quick if this team wants to put all the woes of last year behind them. Given Pierce hadn’t played a game since September he didn’t look horrible, but he is going to need more help from his offensive line if they want him healthy all year.

Bombers next game: Friday July 8th at home against the Argo’s.
