Braves-Phils this weekend

Marcus Young did a good job summing up the Braves-Rockies four game series, so I won’t go into detail. I’ll just throw out some numbers. The Braves are 23-10 since the first of June, which is the best mark in the majors. Atlanta is 2 and a half behind the Phils, and a whopping 5 and a half in first place for the wildcard. This sets up a huge series in Philly.

It seems like this is the first time the two clubs have played this year, but it’s been only since May. Since then, the Fish have floundered, and it looks like it will be a two-team pennant race. With the long layoff, the Braves are nipping on the heels of the Phils and their vaunted rotation. Philly will toss Halladay, Lee, and Hamels, (respectively), while we’ll counter with Beachy, Hanson, and Derek Lowe.

I’ll have to give Halladay the edge tomorrow, but I like Hanson on Saturday and Lowe to round out the first half of the season. I don’t think a sweep by Atlanta is possible, but there is a good chance for a 2 out of three split. IF the pitching can do well, we might be able to squeak out a couple of 4-2 wins. Brian McCann is hitting the hide off the ball. Dan Uggla has his average up to .183. (Mario Mendoza, here we come!) Freddy Freeman knocked a couple of homers as well. By the way, kudos to Craig Kimbrel for getting the rookie save record (27).

After the break, Atlanta has three at home with the Washington Nats, before travelling to Denver and Cincinnati. We will see what happens with the Rocks on the return leg.
