There’s something fishy going on in Anaheim.

Benji GIL, Chuck FIN-ley, Tim Salmon, Robert Fish, Justin Bass, Dave CARP-enter, and now Mike Trout. Do the Angels love water dwelling players, or what? Trout, the top prospect in baseball is now on the big club. He is all of 19 years old. Ask yourself, what were you doing at 19? Let’s hope Trout can show some of the stuff he has been showing at double A. If Trout has a great 3 games, he may find himself on the All-Star team, with all of the players that are bailing out of the Midsummer Classic.
Trout had a nice debut. He didn’t get a hit, but he did track down a ball in the 9th inning that no one else would have caught, except Peter Bourjos
Trout wouldn’t be here right now if Bourjos didn’t tweak his hamstring on Thursday. Bourjos will be out until after the ASG, at least that’s the plan. You never know with hammmys.
I hate to rain on your parade, but Jordan Walden is not an All-Star. He has had some fine moments in the first half, but 6 blown saves doesn’t say All-Star to me. I may have gone with Kyle Farnsworth or Sergio Santos, but that’s me. Walden did pick up the win on Friday with one dominant inning.
I’ll go out on a limb and announce that Jered Weaver will start the All-Star game. Since Weaver is one of the league leaders in most every pitching category and his rotation turn comes up on Tuesday, it seems an obvious choice for Ron Washington. If Weaver starts, he’ll become only the 4th Halo to start a mid-season classic. Dean Chance, Nolan Ryan and Mark Langston were the first three.
Does Weaver’s price keep getting higher with every outing? Enjoy the Southern California native while you can. I wonder what he’ll look like in a Yankee or Red Sox uniform at ten times the price? I would think bad.
Weaver toyed with the Mariners on Thursday. 5 complete games, 1.86 ERA, and 11 wins. I think Weaver has a future in this league.
Mark Trumbo hit a walk off home run on Friday, the first of his career. Did you notice how much room the rest of the Angels gave Trumbo at home plate? It was just over a year ago that Kendry Morales broke his leg at home plate after hitting a walk off home run against these same Mariners. When Trumbo hit it, all I pictured was him breaking his leg. If that happened, no player would be allowed out of the dugout after a walk off, ever!
Trumbo got a face full of shaving cream during the post-game interview. I don’t understand why it has to be shaving cream. Why not whipped cream? At least that would be edible and a tasty treat for the conquering hero. I guess it’s the stinging eyes that brings teams together.
The Angels won Tuesday’s game 4-3. All of their runs coming via the home run. That doesn’t happen much, at least not in Orange County.
Did any of you get your hides chapped when you saw the Angels optioned out Tyler Chatwood?
It’s an easy decision really. Chatwood isn’t at the point in his career where he needs, or deserves all the time off the ASG affords. A couple starts in Salt Lake might keep him fresh. I’m sure he would rather have a few days off.
If Blake Beavan continues to pitch as well as he has, the Mariners will have a scary rotation. Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda, Doug Fister, Beavan, and Erik Bedard isn’t a bad 5. Too bad the Mariners offense is anemic (on a gfood day). I tell ya that trade with Texas may pay divedends to the Mariners for years to come. Justin Smoak, Beavan - and even Justin Leuke could all be above average players.
The Halos are 4-11 so far with RISP. It’s gonna get tougher over the weekend as Hernandez and Pineda are slated to pitch.
Angels are playing real well, but the Rangers are playing better – and still hold a 1-game lead over the Halos in the AL West.
Last Weekend before the All-Star game.
