Padres Limp Into All-Star Break

The San Diego Padres arrived at Dodgers Stadium ahead of Los Angeles in the standings and by the time the weekend series was over they were in last place looking up at the Dodgers. Los Angeles defeated San Diego 4-1 on Sunday to complete the sweep. San Diego could only cross home plate one time the whole weekend and were swept into last place by the Dodgers. San Diego goes into the All-Star break in last place in the National League West trailing first place San Francisco Giants by 12 games.
San Diego was shutout by Los Angeles 1-0 on both Friday and Saturday, but they were the first to score on Sunday afternoon. Rob Johnson gave San Diego an early 1- 0 lead when he homered off Ted Lilly’s first pinch of the third inning and San Diego had its first lead of the series, however, that changed in the bottom of the third inning. San Diego starter Tim Stauffer walked the first three batters and that would lead to trouble for the Padre pitcher. Chase Headley who made a great play to prevent Matt Kemp from getting a hit made a bad throw to home plate to allow Tony Gwynn Jr. and Rafael Furcal to score. Kemp was awarded with a fielder’s choice and RBI and just like that the Padres trailed 2-1.
Andre Ethier of the Dodgers made sure the Padres would not come back to avoid the sweep when he hit a pair of solo home runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Los Angeles goes into the All-Star break winning their last four games.
As for the Padres it looks like their season is all but over barring a miracle second half. Even the most positive Padre fan has to admit that things look bleak. San Diego is dead last in the division trailing San Francisco by a full 12 games, San Diego hosts the Giants for four games starting Thursday. San Diego must sweep San Francisco if they have any hope of getting back into playoff contention. With the trading deadline right around the corner San Diego can expect to start fielding calls inquiring about closer Heath Bell.
