They were a punchline during this year’s ESPY awards.  Jokes about the Miami Heat drew huge laughter from the crowd, which of course included the Dallas Mavericks.  Members of other teams could be seen chuckling during the monologue as well.

The Boston Celtic’s had guys in attendance like Ray Allen, who seemed to find the jokes funny.  The laughter certainly had to feel better than the Heat’s 4-1 beatdown of Boston in the Eastern Conference Playoffs this year.  I hope the rest of the NBA is enjoying the laughter.  Whenever the current lockout ends, the jokes will stop.

Miami and their “Big Three” have taken plenty of abuse during the past twelve months.  Nobody has taken more heat than LeBron James, and while some of it has been warranted, there has been a lot of piling on as well.  Whether this has been a case of people being envious, bitter, or just getting shots in while they can is unclear, but this Heat team is going to continue to get better over the next few years, so the rest of the NBA had better pay attention.

Dwyane Wade has been pretty quiet since the Finals.  He has continued his work in the South Florida community including his basketball camp for kids and says he hasn’t been watching ESPN.  That’s cool Dwyane, they will be keeping an eye on you and waiting for the lockout to end.  Wade did say he might keep the option open to play in Europe if the labor situation drags for too long, but that is probably just a little ammo thrown out there for the NBA Players Association.

Heat players have all been pretty quiet since losing to the Mavericks in June.  That’s fine.  They should, and will let their play next season speak for itself.  Bosh and LeBron will be spending their second season in Miami.  A season that I expect to be the beginning of a 2-3 year run of NBA Titles for the Heat.  Who will be laughing then?
