PGA TOUR: What It Means — July 17, 2011 — British Open

A great new major champion starts this week’s What It Means:
1) Kudos to Darren Clarke on a fantastic victory at The Open Championship today. His par putt at 1 set the tone and the eagle at 7 gave him the lead for good and he never looked back. For someone that’s been in a pretty pronounced slump over the last couple years, a breakout major win at age 42 is fantastic.
It sure seems like the country of Northern Ireland is having their greatest sporting moment in a long time, if not ever, and we are now 3/4 of the way to the Chubby Chandler (Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy, and Clarke’s manager) slam.
2) Phil Mickelson gave it his all, shooting 30 going out including an eagle of his own on #7. But he missed a short putt on 11 and never recovered, eventually finishing in a tie for second.
It’s the short putts that have done much damage to Phil’s chances in majors over the years and they reappeared again today. Phil has all the talent in the world and should be commended on his run today — but he must make more short putts.
3) Poor Dustin Johnson. He’s right there AGAIN in a major and then hits it out of bounds on the par-5 14th. If he even makes par there this is a whole different story.
DJ has all the talent in the world, as we all know, and will get it together soon enough to win a major. But for right now, you have to feel for him — he must be kicking himself once again.
