The NFL lockout is well on it’s way to being over in a very short time and one of the main issues facing teams will be an adjusted salary cap and the Cowboys are one of the teams atop the league in salary. As it stands they will be somewhere around $18 million over the new cap. So obviously Dallas will be looking to shed some of their payroll. So who’s first?
Well all signs point to the end of Marion Barber III as a Cowboys and also, to the delight of many, the end of Roy E. Williams whom many consider to be overpaid. Cutting these guys is probably a no brainer for the team, but cutting these 2, though it will clearly help, will not put them under the cap. So who else should be cut?
Looking at the roster a couple of guys stand out to me that the team could do without.
1 – Keith Brooking – Brooking has already started to show signs of decline, and with the drafting of Bruce Carter out of UNC, may have seen the last of his days with Dallas. Jerry Jones has already said the Brooking will “absolutely” return, but that was before the new guidelines for the new CBA were being determined.
2 – Marc Colombo – Colombo had some injury issues last season and even when he played he didn’t play up to expectations. With the drafting of Tyron Smith Colombo’s roster spot may be in question, especially if the rookie excels early on.
3 – Igor Olshansky – I love the name. I mean who wouldn’t want a guy named Igor on your D-line? But the NFL is about production and Olshansky didn’t have that last season and is one of the top 10 players on the team in terms of salary. If Dallas experiences major salary cap casualties then I think Olshansky will be part of the cuts.
There are probably other players that should or will be cut come a new CBA and Cowboys will have to also consider free agency along with some of the bigger contract players, namely Miles Austin and Tony Romo, being willing to restructure their contracts to allow players to stay and others to come in. This next week following a new agreement will be crazy.
Let me know who you guys think should be cut if and when it comes down to it.
