Decided rather than a full blown blog, I’m just gonna post some random thoughts I’ve had from the game and what else is going on in the news. Enjoy!
-So Anthony Calvillo made history last Friday. In other news, water is wet
Did ANYONE have Eric Deslauriers in their pool for who’d catch the 395th TD? Actually here in the Ottawa area, the Team 1200 radio station were discussing Eric at length and with him taking over Jamel Richardson’s spot in the lineup, maybe he should have been given some consideration.
-Chip Cox. Wow. 108 yards and he will never score an easier touchdown than that. Signing this guy for 4 years was a brilliant move by Jim Popp. Despite the odd bad penalty he takes, there’s no one better at making things happen than Chip.
-Specials Teams will be the Alouettes’ undoing this year. Aside from Walter Spencer and the occasional punishing hit from Kitwana Jones, everything on that unit seems disjointed and hesitant. Sean Whyte looks like a deer in the headlights when the kick returner is barrelling towards him. Say what you will about Damon Duval, but he had no qualms about throwing himself at the returner.
-The Ben Cahoon halftime acknowledgement was just right….gave the fans a chance to cheer for their hero one more time and allowed Ben to thank everyone he needed to. He also finally got his Grey Cup ring, which was a moment in time. A lot of people were expecting/hoping for a jersey retirement ceremony, but that’s an event that needs time & proper promotion. His time will come & #86 will join those other legendary numbers. But I say let’s do it right or don’t do it at all.
IN OTHER NEWS
-Anyone hoping for a 3rd straight Alouettes-Roughriders Grey Cup has to be wondering what’s going on with Saskatchewan right now. 0-3 to start the season was NOT expected! Seems that the defense is the main issue and Tad Kornegay has become the scapegoat for their woes, having been released. Wonder if Montreal will pick him up…if only to ensure he won’t be the victim of another owning on the field by said Alouettes.
-Eskimos 3-0? Also unexpected by many. Say what you will about Eric Tillman, but he knows how to build a winner. That 2007 Roughriders Grey Cup was his doing. There’s reason to believe that a major overhaul was sorely needed in Edmonton and they got it done. Ricky Ray just may be having a Calvillo-like resurgence. But the Eskimos’ 3 victories have come from teams that are a combined 1-8. The true litmus test will be if they can compete with teams like Calgary & Montreal. But there’s reason for hope in Edmonton.
-Winnipeg’s getting a ton of mileage from those retro uniforms from last year. They aren’t terrible, just weird to see that big block W without the bolts. I’m sure at least one of their fans have gotten RUM AND COKE stitched on the back. Saw that in 2009. Anyone who doesn’t follow the CFL would assume there’s a big drinking problem in the ‘Peg.
And that’s it for now. I’ll be back with a preview of the Als/Riders game on Sunday. I’ll be in attendance and buying me beer is not required, but certainly appreciated.
GO ALS GO!

Nice post Cliff. I’m really happy for AC, even though he sucked the hind one while he played for the Cats.

Thanks for the kind words Clint….I remember Anthony’s time in the Hammer. When the Alouettes signed him as a free agent I thought to myself, “You gotta be kidding. This guy??” I have never been so happy to be so wrong in my life. What makes it better is him being such a kind, genuine person off the field as well. We need more men like that in this world!
