In the NHL’s salary cap era, there is one thing that almost every successful team has in common; and that is having at least a few quality young players that are still on entry-level contracts playing in the NHL. Drafting and cultivating prospects has never been as important as it has been over the last 6 seasons. That trend is not slowing down, and fans will continue to see teams promoting their top prospects (especially forwards) at an incredibly fast rate. The reason “especially forwards” was mentioned is because traditionally defensemen and goaltenders need more time to develop, as the adjustment to the pro game is more difficult.
Here is a chart ranking the 30 NHL teams based on the quality of their forward prospects.

Man, is Dallas ever screwed!!! They need to resolve their ownership situation so they can play the UFA game… Also – Don’t underestimate Tomas Kubalik from CMB. He’s a very skilled player who simply needs a strong coaching staff and workout regimen to get to the top-6 level. I watch him all the time (he’s Czech), and I believe he’ll be as impactful as Voracek ever was at least! Great read Corey!!!

Ya I feel bad for Dallas! I like Kubalik – I think he’ll probably be in the NHL this year. The Rangers are looking pretty scary – I’m curious to see if Thomas or Hagelin make the Rangers out of camp.

I think any prospects making it on to the Rangers’ NHL squad will be contingent on us dumping some salary. I think Erixon may have the inside track, and until we dealt Grachev, he had a chance, but otherwise, I think our plate is full. It’s weird to end up with too many quality prospects (especially with Sather running the ship), but it’s an embarassment of riches that I’ll gladly suffer through!

Where’s Brayden Schenn on the Flyers list? He ‘s the best in their system no?
Corey Krakower Jul 21 20113:36 pm
Probably should have had him on come to think of it, but I didn’t because I fully expect him to be in the NHL this season.
