When the Montreal Alouettes take the field against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, they’ll be looking to extend their undefeated streak to 4-0. Anthony Calvillo will be looking to close in on yet another record; he’s 38 away from breaking Damon Allen’s all-time record of completions. And the Roughriders will be looking for the most important thing to them right now: their first win of the season.
Their abysmal play of late would allow Alouettes fans to get over-confident and assume an Als victory is a foregone conclusion. But in the CFL, nothing’s guaranteed. The Riders shook up their locker room by releasing long-time fan favourite Tad Kornegay. Will this be the spark that changes this team or will going 0-4 cause more panic in Rider Nation?
Every year I look forward to this game at Percival Molson Stadium; tons of Riders fan invade us, like they do at every other CFL stadium. It gets loud as heck in there and especially after 2 meetings in the past 2 Grey Cups, these two teams just seem to amp it up against each other. Last year’s meeting of these teams in Montreal saw retro unis, Tim Maypray crossing the Sea of Green for a TD off a missed field goal and all the way to the Riders’ final drive, where all 25,000+ fans were on their feet screaming at the top of their lungs.
Tomorrow’s match will be a weird one, in the sense that it’s a Sunday evening game. We’ve grown used to Thursday and Friday night games, even the occasional Saturday evening game. But Sunday night and it’s not the Grey Cup? The cynic in me wonders if it was done for the benefit of the American fans watching on the NFL Network in the USA who must be jonesing for Sunday evening football.
After what feels like a eternity, Jamel Richardson is finally using his Twitter account (@jamelrichardson). He’s one of the more popular and fan-friendly players on the team, always happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans after each home game. Now he’ll have a chance to reach out even further to his numerous fans.
If you haven’t already, take a run over to http://www.GoAlsGo.com. Its message board has become a tremendous source of information and opinion for all things Alouettes. Run by fans for the fans, their online community is a fantastic one.
See you at the game tomorrow…or catch my live tweets as I usually do.
