PGA TOUR What It Means: July 24, 2011 — Canadian Open

A popular player wins again in this week’s What It Means:
1) Sean O’Hair is an interesting case study. Estranged from his biological father, he had to overcome a lot off the golf course to find success on it. He got 3 PGA Tour wins. Then his golf game left him and he let his caddie and his coach, Sean Foley, go. He was struggling, big time.
But in golf it only takes one week to turn it all around and that was the RBC Canadian Open for O’Hair, beating Kris Blanks today in a playoff. Bogey was enough in the playoff for victory, after Blanks played a bunker shot through the green and played a questionable chip shot that left himself with a putt for bogey he failed to make on the first playoff hole.
Maybe this is the launching pad onto bigger things for O’Hair that so many of us have been waiting for.
2) John Daly got a top 10. Let me repeat that: John Daly got a top 10. He finished a T-9 at the RBC, hopefully beginning a comeback for him. He’s still very popular, and when his body, mind, soul and golf game are on the same page he can still be very good.
I’d love to see John Daly back in the winner’s circle.
3) Much has been made of Tiger Woods’ split with Steve Williams this week but I honestly don’t think it’ll affect TW much on the course. He’s so smart that he can basically play high level golf on his own, and the issues for Tiger going forward will be mental and physical, nothing having to do with his caddie.
