100 Games Down, A Long Way to Go

The Yankees sit at an even .600 after drubbing the Mariners in game 100. It’s respectable, sure, but it’s still not good enough for first place, since the Red Sox have a 2-game lead in the AL East.
The Bombers have had some great moments, like Derek Jeter entering the 3,000 hit club on a home run in an absolutely perfect day for him. They’ve also had some disasters – injury-related and in general. No one on the team is batting .300, except for Eric Chavez, who hopes to come off the DL soon. The counter to that is their home run production is a tad ridiculous, with Granderson and Teixeira nearing the 30 mark sometime soon.
Let’s not mince words, though. The pitchers have been keeping this team afloat. CC is approaching his 15th win, and Garcia is just shy of 10. Rivera, Robertson and Ayala all have ERAs below 2.00. Joba is out for the year after Tommy John surgery, but Phil Hughes is back. The staff is strong, it’s just a matter of whether it will get the necessary run support.
Sure, it’s great when the Yankees can score 10 against the M’s, but if they lose 3-2 to the likes of the Red Sox and Rays, then they have a problem. They have a bit of a break, facing the Mariners and Orioles before taking on the White Sox, but then New York faces Boston, whom they’ve been unable to solve all season. The next 62 games are where the rubber hits the road. If they are going to come alive at the plate, they need to do it soon since Texas isn’t too far off the Wild Card pace.
