Padres Avoid Being Swept By Phillies

The San Diego Padres averted being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies by defeating the National League East leaders 5-4 in the final game of the four game series in Philadelphia.  The Phillies had defeated San Diego the last 10 games the teams played, it was June 7, 2010 the last time the Padres tasted victory over the Phillies.

Cliff Lee once again struggled on the mound as he has done all of July.  Lee only lasted four innings, his second shortest outing of the season.  In four innings he allowed 10 hits, five runs and allowed Chris Denorfia to steal home.

Philadelphia opened the scoring in the first inning when Shane Victorino doubled that allowed Chase Utley to score and it looked like Philadelphia would polish off the Padres for the fourth straight time and get the sweep.

The Padres showed in the second inning that things were going to be different today as they scored four runs in the inning.  The second inning was highlighted by Chris Denorfia stealing home giving the Padres a 3-1 lead.  It was the first time a Padre stole home since July 6, 2005 when Mark Sweeney accomplished the feat.   San Diego got their fourth run of the inning when Chase Headley doubled in Jason Bartlett and the Citizens Bank Park fans were stunned at what had just happened to their heroes.

San Diego built their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning and was able to hold off the Phillies to get the victory.   The Phillies fought back to make it a one run game and had a chance to tie the score in the eighth, but could not get a timely hit to drive in Shane Victorino from third.  San Diego closer Heath Bell was able to get Jimmy Rollins to fly out in the ninth with a runner on second to end the game; it was Bell’s 29th save of the season.  San Diego starts a three game series with Arizona on Tuesday at Petco Park.  The question is will Heath Bell still be a Padre when the series ends on Thursday.
