The NFL has returned and a lot of players are traveling to new teams.  Somewhere in Mississippi, there is an old quarterback smiling and maybe seeing if he can’t get in on this.  For the Minnesota Vikings, however, there are plenty of changes happening, and this time around they won’t involved #4.  Nope, the Vikes get #5 instead.  Donovan McNabb will be a Viking sometime in the next 24 hours.

Minnesota has agreed to trade two 6th round picks to the Redskins for the QB.  The only thing that has to be finalized is the restructuring of McNabb’s contract.  He is scheduled to make upwards of $14 million this year and that is a number I’m sure the Vikings would like to see lowered or at least partially deferred.

One of the first free agent QB’s to find a new home was Tarvaris Jackson, who on Tuesday agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks.  The now former Vikings QB will join Darrell Bevell, his offensive coordinator in Minnesota, out west.  Viking fans probably aren’t too concerned about either of these guys.  T-Jack was far from a fan favorite.  What should concern Minnesota fans is the thought of Sidney Rice following Bevell and Jackson to Seattle.  That is a very real possibility.  If Santonio Holmes is worth $50 million over five years, what is Rice worth on the open market.

While I do not find the addition of McNabb exciting, Christian Ponder, a rookie without the benefit of OTA’s and offseason workouts, would scare me.  Donovan is a good short-term investment.  Sidney Rice, on the other hand, the Vikings need long-term.  He means as much to the offense as any player not named Adrian Peterson.

The next few days will tell the story.  If Minnesota can keep Rice, plus the addition of McNabb, this season will have real promise.  If not, the Seahawks may be the ones chasing the playoffs.
