A no-no for Santana. Yes, Ervin Santana throws a no hitter.

How many times this year has Ervin Santana out-shone Jered Weaver and Dan Haren? I would say not one time. That all changed on Wednesday.

Coming off his last start in Baltimore I thought Ervin Santana couldn’t pitch better. He threw 5.1 of no hit ball against the Orioles. He would give 3 hits in just over 7 innings pitched, but he looked awesome. I could not, and would not, have expected to see him pitch even better 5 days later, but he did! And that’s an understatement.

Santana rolled through the Indians lineup on his way to his first ever NO HITTER. Santana faced just 2 batters over the minimum while tossing a very economical 105 pitches.

The Indians actually led 1-0 through 4 innings, but they had no hits. I remember Andy Hawkins lost a game where he threw a no-no. I was hoping that wouldn’t happen to Santana. The Indians scored on an error, stolen base, a ground out, and a wild pitch in the 1st inning.

Now we all know the Angels offense comes and goes. In the 3 games in Cleveland it mostly went south, but they were able to push across individual runs in the 5th and 6th, and 9th inning. Santana did the rest.

From the first inning to the 8th inning, Santana retired 20 straight batters. He made the 9th inning look like a walk in the park. A strike out of Buck, a ground out by Carrera and a fly out by Brantley sealed the deal.

Nice little revenge for Santana wouldn’t you think? He got lit in his major league debut in Cleveland back in 2005. And I’m sure he is happy to have made history, becoming the first player to throw a no hitter at Progressive field. He’ll now be a Jeopardy trivia question… “Yes, Alex, Who is Ervin Santana”.

So I’ve seen Santana’s no-no Wednesday. Mike Witt’s and Mark Langston’s combined one in 1990, Witt’s perfect game in 1984, and one of Nolan Ryan’s back in the 70′s. That makes it 9 no hitters for the Halos organization.

I’ve also seen Bert Blyleven’s, Dennis Eckersley’s, Joe Cowley’s, Kenny Roger’s, and Mike Warren’s. Sadly, they threw them against the Halos.

Joel Pineiro has a tough act to follow. I don’t count on him throwing a no hitter. Well, he may no hit the Tigers for 1 inning–haha

Go Angels!!
