The Philadelphia Eagles have reached agreement on a five-year contract with Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin, who had a breakout season with Tennessee last year and who two years ago was allowed to leave Philadelphia for free agency.
Babin played for the Eagles in 2009 then signed with the Titans in free agency and had a career-best 12.5 sacks playing under defensive line coach Jim Washburn. He’s now reunited with Washburn, who joined the Eagles in the same role during the offseason.
A first-round pick by Houston in 2004, the 31-year-old Babin never had more than five sacks in a season until last year. He has 30 career sacks in seven seasons playing for five different teams.
Babin will play opposite two-time Pro Bowl end Trent Cole. He joins a crowded line that includes 2010 first-round pick Brandon Graham, Juqua Parker, Ricky Sapp, Darryl Tapp, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim and CFL veteran Philip Hunt. Parker was the starter in 2010 with a rotation but Hunt and now Babin have signed via free agency. Graham isn’t expected to be ready for the start of the season after having surgery for a torn knee ligament late last year. This marks a HUGE upgrade at the position from the 2010 squad.
Rumors of another Washburn disciple returning to the fold have been squashed as Albert Haynesworth has been traded to the New England Patriots (5th round pick). Jason Babin has agreed to a 5-year deal ($30M) with the Eagles. Babin will report to camp immediately as he’d been in Philadelphia to negotiate the deal.
Nnamdi Asomugha rumored to either NY Jets or Houston Texans (not SF 49ers). Haynesworth to New England. Reggie Bush to Miami. Plaxico Burress rumored to be heading back to either NY Giants or Pittsburgh Steelers. Can we stop talking about them now and focus on DeSean Jackson’s holdout and the trade of Kevin Kolb to Arizona please?
