Buffone Fantasy Football Guide RBs 36-40: Hidden Gems

Posted By John Buffone On Jul 28 2011 @ 11:54 am In Fantasy Football | No Comments

As we approach the bottom of the barrel, it’s no time to get lackadaisical about your selections. There is always one or two fantasy gems planted within a field of trash. That’s where research is key.

Running backs 1-5 [1]              Running backs 21-25 [2]

Running backs 6-10  [3]          Running backs 26-30 [4]

  [2]Running backs 11-15 [5]         Runningbacks 31-35 [6]

Running backs 16-20 [7]

#36- Roy Helu: RB- Washington Redskins

[8]

Helu will have an opportunity to battle for the starting position in D.C.

Age: 22

Height: 6’0

Weight: 220

Bye Week: 5

Keeper Status: Fair

2010 Stats:

Rushing: N/A

Receiving: N/A

2011 Projected Stats:

Rushing: 498 yards            4 TD

Receiving: 3 Rec.            12 yards            0 TD

Helu was the #150 pick in the 2011 draft and has the potential to be a solid running back in the future. Helu’s frame and 4.40 forty time give him an impressive cocktail of size and speed. Although Helu is a no-nonsense back that hits the hole hard, his agility is poor and won’t make too many defenders miss in the open field. He’s also had some injury issues in numerous areas of his body that could have resulted from his upright running style. Helu is going to be a work in progress but has a good foundation.

#37- Felix Jones: RB-Dallas Cowboys

[9]

With Marion Barber gone, Jones could possibly see an increased workload.

Age: 24

Height: 5’10

Weight: 220

Bye Week: 5

Keeper Status: Poor

2010 Stats:

Rushing: 800 yards            1 TD

Receiving: 48 Rec.            450 yards            1 TD

2011 Projected Stats:

Rushing: 441 yards            1 TD

Receiving: 22 Rec.            285 yards            2 TD

It’s hard to really put faith into a Dallas back because of the sheer amount of them they use. Jones found himself splitting time with Marion Barber and Tashard Choice in 2010 and now newly drafted DeMarco Murray can be added to that list. Jones is an extremely gifted runner who can break a big play at any time as well as contributing as a receiver. It just doesn’t seem like there will be enough carries to go around this year now that starting QB Tony Romo is back.

#38- Pierre Thomas: RB- New Orleans Saints

[10]

Thomas will have to battle off rookie Mark Ingram to continue to put up numbers.

Age: 26

Height: 5’11

Weight: 215

Bye Week:11

Keeper Status: Poor

2010 Stats:

Rushing: 269 yards            2 TD

Receiving: 29 Rec. 201 yards            0 TD

2011 Projected Stats:

Rushing: 721 yards            2 TD

Receiving: 31 Rec.            217 yards            1 TD

In the six games that Thomas played in last year, he had decent numbers. The most important stat however, is the amount of games he missed. In his four-year career, Thomas has never played a complete season and although the drafting of Mark Ingram will lessen his chances of getting hurt, it will almost certainly take a huge bite out of his production. Even if Thomas is healthy all year, he’s really only useful as a handcuff.

#39- Michael Bush: RB- Free Agent

[11]

Depending on his landing spot, Bush could take his game to the next level in 2011.

Age: 26

Height: 6’1

Weight: 245

Bye Week: N/A

Keeper Status: Fair

2010 Stats:

Rushing: 655 yards            8 TD

Receiving: 18 Rec.        194 yards         0 TD

2011 Projected Stats:

Rushing: 547 yards            3 TD

Receiving: 12 Rec.            96 yards            0 TD

Coming out of Louisville in 2007, Bush was regarded as one of the highest NFL prospects until breaking his leg towards the end of his college career. Since being drafted by Oakland, Bush has rarely been utilized for his strengths and could be missing the boat if he stays in the Bay Area to play second fiddle to Darren McFadden. Bush is very quick for his size (6’1, 245 lbs.) and can contribute in the receiving game as well. Bush had a career high 158 carries last season and managed to rack up 655 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and 8 touchdowns. Bush isn’t necessarily going to be a stud this season but if he goes to the right system, he’s going to open some eyes.

#40- James Starks: RB- Green Bay Packers

[12]

The health of the running backs in front of Starks will determine how much of a workload he gets this season.

Age: 25

Height: 6’2

Weight: 218

Bye Week: 8

Keeper Status: Poor

2010 Stats:

Rushing: 101 yards            0 TD

Receiving: 2 Rec.            15 yards            0 TD

2011 Projected Stats:

Rushing: 398 yards            3 TD

Receiving: 13 Rec.            94 yards            0 TD

The second-year back out of Buffalo will get to see increaed time on the field this year and could see even more if Ryan Grant gets injured again or leaves town.
