Young and Restless Eagles Flurry of Moves

Goodbye to four years of Kevin Kolb, hello to one year for Vince Young.

[1]According to reports from NFL Network and CSNPhilly the Philadelphia Eagles have signed two-time Pro Bowl quarterback and former Tennessee Titans star Vince Young to a one-year deal. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed as yet.

[2] [3]Just a day after the Eagles completed the blockbuster trade that sent former backup QB Kevin Kolb to Arizona in exchange for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round pick, it seems “a virtual certainty” that Young will report to camp Monday and will serve as the primary backup to Michael Vick. Mike Kafka will remain the third string QB behind Young despite having an entire year in the Eagles system.

[4]Young, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, is 30-18 in five NFL seasons, including one playoff loss. His 2010 season was cut short after suffering a season-ending thumb injury on his throwing hand in November. Young has never run the West Coast offense and his fallout with former Head Coach Jeff Fisher has been well-publicized. Young has the reputation to be a terrible practice player and to rely on his natural talents rather than work habits… but then again, that used to be Michael Vick’s M.O. as well…

[6]CAMP FODDER: In other Eagles Camp News from Lehigh… former PK David Akers has signed with the San Francisco 49ers… First round pick Danny Watkins remains unsigned despite being eager to report to camp… Jason Babin and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are scheduled to report to camp today. Since “DRC” was already under an existing contract he may begin practicing with the Eagles immediately.…DeSean Jackson remains a holdout (now officially as his report deadline was today with grace period) and there is no progress on [7]those negotiations. Jackson Should be in Camp by August 9th. Why August 9th? Under the new CBA any player not in camp by August 9th loses a pension credit towards becoming an unrestricted free agent. Assuming Jackson is in camp prior to August 9th he will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2011 season. In the mean [8]time, Drew Rosenhaus continues to squeeze the Eagles for every dollar and drop of blood they can spare…Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo reports that Jamar Chaney and Casey Matthews are in a dead heat competition for the starting MLB spot… unless they are waiting to sign a free agent…

[9]Sproles to Eagles?
Apparently there was a Darren Sproles contest that the Eagles became a finalist in, word around the internet is the Eagles, Saints, and Chargers are all “finalist” for the chance to sign running back Darren Sproles. Eagles have LeSean McCoy as the starter with Jerome Harrison, Eldra Buckley, rookie Dion Lewis and undrafted rookie Graig Cooper in camp. Stanley Havilli remains unsigned but should compete for  the fullback position.

Rehabbing Leonard Weaver has still not been cleared to return to football activities after a terrible knee injury in the 2010 opener. Weaver could opt to retire but will likely be released by the Eagles once he makes a decision. Sproles was being considered due to his increased value on Special Teams but has been signed by New Orleans Saints as of today’s newsticker.

Bumps and Bruises
OT Jason Peters
and CB Trevard Lindley left practice with the help of a trainer Thursday afternoon. Both were participating in a half speed practice with no pads or helmets…

[10]Redskins steal our Croc Punter
CRIKEY! CSNWashington.com reports the Redskins are going to sign former Eagles punter Sav Rocca. The Redskins signing of Rocca means Eagles’ fans will still be treated to Rocca shanking punts this season. Rocca gets his first chance to shank a punt against his former team when the Eagles visit FedEx field, October 16th… Undrafted rookie P Chas Henry won the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s best punter while at Florida. He punted 40 times for 1,892 yards (47.3 average) and 14 of his 34 punts (41.2%) went 50 yards or more.

[11]Babin Getting 30 Million
As reported yesterday the Eagles signed defensive end Jason Babin Thursday, at the time of the initial announcement the money involved in the deal was unknown. The report of the deal is 5 years for a total of $30 million for a pass rush specialist? Babin had an   11 ½ sack season in 2011 and better duplicate that. Babin is due to report to camp today.
