A fantastic finish starts this week’s What It Means:
1) What a fantastic finish by Scott Stallings to win the Greenbrier Classic today. He rebounds from a horrible bogey at the par-5 17th after hitting it in the water on his tee shot by stiffing it next to the pin on 18 and getting into a playoff with Bill Haas and Bob Estes and then repeats the feat in the playoff and sinks the putt for the win.
Add him to the list of young guns who may well turn into stars. And now he’s going to Augusta.
2) It was nice to see Anthony Kim in contention this weekend. Even though he succumbed to Sunday pressure somewhat, we all know how much talent he has and he backed up a pretty good showing at the British Open with another strong performance this week. He’s on the brink of breaking through into the winner’s circle again.
3) Tiger Woods returns at the Bridgestone Invitational this week. I have no idea how he’ll play — just like he probably doesn’t know how he’ll play. But I do know this: his short game has basically been awful this year. While he’s only been able to hit balls for the last week, he’s been working on his short game for a while, and maybe, just maybe, that can save him this week and get him into contention come the weekend.
