Diamondbacks Strike Gold with Trades This Weekend

The Arizona Diamondbacks not only won this weekend while the Giants lost a few games but they also won big in the trade market.  The buzz around the league was that the Diamondbacks would not be giving up prospects to win now.  The big idea was the Diamondbacks want to win long term not just this year.  The Diamondbacks have holes especially in the bullpen; however, the Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers would not give up the farm.

The D'Backs made two big additions this weekend with Jason Marquis as a starter and Brad Ziegler in the bullpen.

Then, Saturday the Diamondbacks struck a deal bring All Star starting pitcher Jason Marquis from the Nationals for prospect infielder Zachary Walters.  This corrected the hole in the rotation; however, the biggest hole still remained in the bullpen.  Hours before the deadline, the Diamondbacks struck again with a trade involving the A’s.  This trade involved picking up star reliever Brad Ziegler in exchange for 1B Brandon Allen and Reliever Jordan Norberto.

These two trades solidify the Diamondbacks rotation and bullpen.  Will it solve all of the problems remains to be seen?  The only holes left are in their lineup.  The first hole is at SS with Stephen Drew out the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.  The other hole is at 1B, when the Diamondbacks demoted Juan Miranda they brought up Brandon Allen who is no longer with the Diamondbacks.

Now the question is who plays 1B from here on out?  Juan Miranda could be brought up but the biggest speculation is if the Diamondbacks will bring up star prospect Paul Goldschmidt.  All signs point to Goldschmidt being brought up for the series as early as Monday against San Francisco.  Is this the best idea?  He is a stud right now in Mobile at the AA level but still has not been tested at the AAA level or even the MLB level.  If he can continue his success he will become the bat that the Diamondbacks need to stay successful as they chase the Giants in the NL West race.  With Goldschmidt and the addition of some pitching the Diamondbacks are poised to stay in the race for the entire season.

Paul Goldschmidt looks to make the jump to the big leagues and be the extra bat the D'Backs need.

The next question is with the addition of Marquis what pitcher moves to the bullpen.  The speculation is either Micah Owings or Josh Collmenter will be moved to the bullpen.  With the success that Collmenter has had at the MLB level in his rookie season the clear-cut choice is to send Micah to the bullpen, however, Micah has been no slouch either.  Either way the bullpen will be solid with the Owings/Collmenter addition with the Brad Ziegler addition.

The Diamondbacks take on the NL West leaders San Francisco Giants Monday night with Ian Kennedy taking on Matt Cain.  The Giants now cling to only a 2 game lead and the Diamondbacks can take that lead with this 3 game series in the bay area.
