The Atlanta Falcons appear to be ready for the season. They’ve signed all of their draft picks, including 1st round pick WR Julio Jones. Julio Jones appears to be the spark that the Falcons offense needed last year. I know our team was good last year, but they lacked a truly vertical passing attack.
The Falcons also released Michael Jenkins and Jamaal Anderson. Jenkins, a wide receiver, was a former first round pick and was known for his height and his ability to catch on 3rd down. However, he wasn’t the fastest guy and couldn’t draw enough of the defense to prevent Roddy White from being double teamed.
Defensive End Jamaal Anderson was released, mainly because of his lack of production. Even though he was a good run stuffer, he severely lacked in the pass rushing department. Over his career, he has totaled 4.5 sacks. And this was a first round pick. The releasing of Jenkins and Anderson opened up 7 million dollars in cap room for the Falcons.
And what did they do with that 7 million dollars?
Well they went out and got the piece they needed on defense. The Falcons acquired Defensive End Ray Edwards through the Free Agency and got him for less than we previously thought. The deal was 30 million dollars total for five years. He is a former Viking, and he has put up 16.5 sacks over the past two seasons. That may not seem like much, but he is a good compliment to John Abraham and will take some pressure off him, and vice versa. And even better, Ray Edwards is only 26 and he still has a major upside.
Also, more imporantly, the Falcons resigned some key players on their team. They resigned LBs Mike Peterson and Stephen Nicholas, and resigned OLs Justin Blalock and Tyson Clabo. Unfortunately, they lost Harvey Dahl
and Jason Snelling to the Rams. RB Jason Snelling is visiting several teams and could be signed by another team, rather than return to Atlanta. The one remaining free agent left to sign is Brent Grimes, and he is a restricted free agent with a first round tender placed on him.
More on the Atlanta Falcons to come soon, with updates on the official practices.
