Padre Season Slowly Coming To A Painful End

The San Diego Padres started a three game series against the hated Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday at Petco Park in San Diego. It turned out to be another outstanding pitching performance by the Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw threw a complete game leading the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory. Kershaw has now won his last five starts and is the one bright spot for the Dodgers this year. Kershaw has thrown four complete games this year.
The rivalry between San Diego and Los Angeles does not have much meaning this year considering where both teams sit in the standings in the NL West. Los Angeles and San Diego bring up the rear in the NL West with no chance of making the playoffs. San Diego is 14.5 games behind first place San Francisco, while the Dodgers trail the Giant by 11.5 games. It looks like the season can’t end quickly enough for the Padres as their record over their last ten games is 3 – 7.
Kershaw was the pitching story, while Matt Kemp was the offensive star of the game. Kemp who had a dismal performance last year has had a big turnaround year for the Dodgers. Kemp was a one man wrecking crew; he doubled, tripled, scored two runs and drove in his league-leading 83rd run of the season.
The trading deadline has come and gone and surprisingly Heath Bell is still a Padre. San Diego made a couple of deals at the trading deadline shipping out relief pitcher Mike Adams and outfielder Ryan Ludwick for the some prospects. I’m sure those moves will bring Padres fans to Petco Park in record numbers. In regards to Heath Bell it would appear they were asking too much in return and could not find a trading partner. I guess they will see if they can sign him to a long-term contract before he becomes a free agent. This writer feels they missed a golden opportunity to pick up some talent for next year as there is no guarantee they will be able to convince Bell to stay in San Diego.
