Trade Winds Blow Past Bombers

The surprising news out of the Bronx at the trade deadline was that there was no news. Brian Cashman sat back and didn’t make any moves. I think this was a smart decision.
The Yankees are in a good position to make the post-season, although they currently trail Boston by a game. They are very protective of their minor league talent, and, let’s be honest, no one on the market was that attractive anyway.
At this point in the season, the Bombers need to stay healthy, number one, and Joe Girardi needs to figure out a few things prior to October. Who’s he going to count on to take the mound in the post-season? The smart money is on CC and Bartolo Colon, imho. AJ can be very, very good – or very, very bad, and despite last night’s performance against the White Sox, I’m not convinced that Phil Hughes is back for good. Freddy Garcia has experience and I like Ivan Nova’s pluck. Roberston has established himself in the pen, and of course there’s no question about Mariano.
A-Rod is out for the meantime, and I honestly don’t think he’s missed. If anything, he’s a distraction, and this is Jeter’s year to bask in the glory. I’m excited to see Chavez back and I think he adds a calming veteran presence to the team. Nunez and Pena, when needed, can fill the gaps in the infield. Cano and Tex are solid. The outfield is just fine and I think Martin has done a solid job behind the plate.
The Bombers are living up to their name, blasting home runs up and down the lineup, but what is of concern, is that .300 seems like a relatively elusive mark this year. If the home run totals were slightly lower and the averages higher I might take a little more solace in that. If/when the Yankees make it to the series, I would bank on them facing the Phillies or Giants, both of which have monsters in their rotations. They’re not going to give up a ton of runs, especially not on the long ball.
Overall, the Yankees did well by not doing anything. I think Brian Cashman should be commended for that. Now, all they have to do is win with what they’ve got.
