Mike Patterson has a brain condition called arteriovenous malformation (AVM) — essentially the tangling of two blood vessels in the brain near the skull — that will require either surgery or radiation, Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder told the media via ESPN. A team official confirmed the ESPN report and distributed it to the rest of the media.
Patterson had a seizure during Wednesday’s practice and was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital for testing. He remained there overnight.
The arteries and veins in an AVM can rupture, causing bleeding into the brain (according to mayoclinic.com). Patterson did not have any bleeding in his brain after he underwent an MRI, Burkholder said Wednesday. AVMs also can cause seizures, headaches or noise in your ear.
Patterson’s AVM apparently caused a seizure and it is unclear whether or not this is an isolated incident or what should be expected moving forward. Burkholder will address reporters with additional information and further test results following practice today.
