Well, I was about to start this What It Means with Adam Scott, but I just can’t.
1) Steve Williams to CBS after Adam Scott’s win at the Bridgestone Invitational: “I’ve caddied for 33 years, 145 wins, and this has been the best week of my life.” In one of the most brash, selfish, pompous, and possibly idiotic moments I’ve ever seen on golf television, Williams made sure to make HIMSELF the center of attention, and, by referring to himself as a great front-runner, sure made it seem like HE hit all the shots.
I firmly believe that this is a fantastic moment for golf, and has now created a rivalry between Tiger Woods and Adam Scott that never previously existed. Bring on a Woods-Scott pairing. Wow.
2) Meanwhile, Adam Scott has continued his strong play from The Masters and has won a huge, World Golf Championship event. He’s comfortable with the long putter, is hitting it great, and is walking with a great level of confidence. He’s arguably the favorite for next week, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him competing for the PGA Championship title come Sunday.
3) Then there’s Tiger Woods, whose play at times this week was very good and very bad but came out of it healthy and pretty positive. He’ll need to hit more fairways and putt better next week if he wants to contend, but who knows, maybe this Tiger story does have another chapter in it.
