Seahawks stabilize pass rush by re-signing Raheem Brock

The Seahawks ensured that they had the best pass-rushing defensive ends in the division by re-signing Raheem Brock on August 4th. Brock, who had a career year last year, recording 9 sacks, had been testing the free agent market in hopes of securing a lucrative, multi-year contract. Fortunately for the Hawks, teams didn’t feel that the 33 year-old Brock had enough left in the tank to invest in him long term. He decided to return to Seattle on a one year contract, and will again team up with Chris Clemons to bring the heat on opposing quarterbacks.
Last year, Clemons and Brock recorded the third highest sack total (20) of any teammate pair of defensive ends in the league (following only the Giants’ duo of Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora who had 23 sacks, and the Colts’ Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis who combined for 21 sacks). With the team currently looking a little green at safety and in the secondary in general, a consistent pass rush looks a more likely way of disrupting the opponent’s passing game than tight coverage.
Brock, a 274 pound defensive end, is a relentless player, and his energy, emotion, and quickness on the edge of the defense quickly made him a fan favorite last season.
Brock was the sixth Seahawk defensive lineman to sign a contract with the team since July 28th, and the unit should comprise the strongest part of the defense. Hopefully all these additions mean that the pass rush generated by Brock and the boys on the line will be giving the CenturyLink Field crowd something to cheer about on third and long.
