Giant Question Marks Going into 1st Preseason Game

After a tumultuous few weeks of both the offseason and training camp, the New York Giants will finally get to hit somebody else.

Big Blue plays their first preseason game this Saturday against number one draft pick Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. The team has struggled with the entire situation with their Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who the Giants have desperately tried to trade away but has been nothing but a major headache for the team. Umenyiora is currently looking into specialists regarding his injured knee to see if he may possibly need surgery on it. Not to be outdone, their first round draft pick cornerback Prince Amukamara broke his foot after one full day of training camp. So currently, the defensive front of Big Blue is a question mark going into the first preseason game.

On the offensive side, the leadership of quarterback Eli Manning will have to be crucial this season again after the disappointing end to last year. Manning, now entering his eight season in the league, had his career high in touchdowns (31), but also had his career high in interceptions as well (25). The Giants are happy to see that their rushing core return after the resigning of Ahmad Bradshaw along with Brandon Jacobs. The ‘thunder and lightning’ combination will be a tough challenge for any defense to take. The young front of receivers (Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks) have one more year of maturity, and it will important to Manning and their offensive line (minus released Shaun O’Hara and Rich Seubert) for them to step up after injuries tampered with their success last season.

While the game itself may not ‘count’ in the standings, the team must put into use what they’ve been practicing the past two weeks. Preseason is important to those second and third string players playing in the second half when those players looking for a spot and opportunity can make an impression to the coaching staff. There will be probably still some rust going into the first preseason game, but at least the Giants can escape all the questions and just play ball.
