Going Buc Wild: Ready for Football
Posted By Justin Chechourka On Aug 11 2011 @ 5:06 pm In Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 2 Comments
I tweeted this the other day, but the first preseason game is like Christmas. But only if someone took away your new toys 10 minutes after playing with them and telling you, you’ll get to play with them for real in four weeks.
Still… IT’S FOOTBALL! And all I can say is… so glad you’re back my old friend.
Let’s talk Buccaneers now. I’d be remiss if I didn’t recap the off season, but if you’re reading this you probably know… so here are the highlights.
- Draft: 5 of 8 picks on defense
- Free Agent signings: Punter Michael Koenen (huge money there, guess field position is costly)
- Coming Back: Davin Joseph, Jeremy Trueblood, Quincy Black
- See ya around: Barrett Ruud, Cadillac Williams
- Arrests: Aqib Talib (sigh)
OK, enough about the past. Let’s talk about why Bucs fans are fired up! The biggest reason can be explained in these two words… “explosive”… and “offense”.
Let’s start with Josh Freeman. Sorry Doug Williams, but Freeman is the team’s first real franchise QB. He is coming off a sophomore season of 26 TD, 5 INT season. Now, the likes of Warren Sapp are talking about league MVP honors this year. Just talking about that makes me want to put my number 5 jersey on right now.
And it doesn’t stop with the QB. Mike Williams had one of the best rookie seasons ever for a wide receiver. He and LeGarrette Blount led all rookies in receiving and rushing.
Speaking of Blount, was there a better off-the-scrap-heap pick up? If this was fantasy football, you’d be talking crazy smack to your league. Then again is there anyone that makes you more nervous about him repeating his amazing rookie year?
While last season was all about the new offense, this season is all about defense. Gerald McCoy looks like he’s taken over as the leader of defense. And this year he has some help. By all accounts, Adrian Clayborn has looked amazing in camp while Da’Quan Bowers is being used cautiously for the time being. Meanwhile, Mason Foster takes over the MLB spot for the departed Barrett Ruud. Giddy, is the only word that can describe how I feel about them all being unleashed.
The Bucs get their first test on Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs. We likely will only get to see the starters play for about 20 snaps. But just seeing some of these guys put on the Pewter/Red for the first time will be good enough for me to go Buc Wild!
