CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have revealed their 4th commemorative statue outside of Wrigley Field. Ron Santo, a former Chicago Cubs player, broadcaster and all-time fan of the Chicago Cubs had his statue revealed yesterday at the corner of Addison and Sheffield. Hundreds of fans gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the newly unveiled statue. Also in attendance were former Cubs Fergie Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and Glenn Beckert.

Current members of the Cubs in attendance included Kerry Wood, Ryan Dempster, Reed Johnson, James Russell, Sean Marshall, manager Mike Quade and the coaching and training staff. All took the time to embrace the special moment and appreciate the contributions of a great man.

Before the game, Ron Santo’s grandson, Sam Brown, threw the first pitch to one of Santo’s close friends Kerry Wood. The unveiling of the statue could not have been capped off better than a win for the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs were hosting the second game of the series against the Washington Nationals pitting Rodrigo Lopez (2-3) against Ross Detwiler (1-1) – both pitchers hoping to salvage some wins before the end of the season. The Cubs gave up an early lead as Ryan Zimmerman crossed the plate in the top of the 1st. Geovany Soto answered with a solo HR in bottom of the 2nd. Alfonso Soriano doubled in the bottom of the 4th to score Soto, while Reed Johnson homered in the bottom of the 5th to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

Jayson Werth hit a Washington HR in the top of the 6th to keep the game interesting for the Nationals. After the home run, Cubs fans everywhere might hear Ron Santo saying as he used to say on the 720 WGN broadcast, “Oh dangit! Here we go again.”

The spirits were high though in Wrigley when Soriano socked his 20th HR of the season in the bottom of the 6th to give the Cubs a 2 run lead. Carlos Marmol then entered the game in the top of the 9th and dominated with three strikeouts for his 25th save of the season lifting the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.
