The Minnesota Vikings opened the 2011 preseason in Nashville with a 14-3 loss to the Titans. This was probably something to be expected. Across the NFL, teams have been trying to make up for lost time. The number of practices before the first game has basically been cut in half this year, and for any team bringing in a new QB, the offense would have it even tougher in the early going.
Donovan McNabb made his first appearance with horns on and actually looked pretty sharp. The Vikings didn’t put any points on the board with him at the controls, but he did seem to have good timing with the other guys on offense.
The other two QB’s were shaky at best. Neither Joe Webb or Christian Ponder looked especially comfortable in the pocket. Webb had several scrambles for positive yardage, but if he is going to win the second-string job he will have to get his timing down on pass plays. Ponder had a few nice throws, but his positive plays also came from movement outside the pocket. Viking fans should take too much away from this game when looking at the quarterback position. The next couple of weeks, however, will be an important gauge for all three guys.
The best performance on offense came from Lorenzo Booker. The former Florida State star who was picked up by Minnesota late last season, led the team in rushing and receiving on Saturday night. Except for a fumble, his play was excellent.
While the Minnesota offense had some real positives, and Jaymar Johnson looked good on special teams, the defense didn’t play very well. In the first half, Tennessee move the ball very well and rookie QB Jake Locker made some excellent throws, including a 45 yard TD pass to Yamon Figures. Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier did make some comments at halftime about his teams poor tackling.
The bottom line is very simple. This is week #1 of the preseason. Now is the time to make adjustments and improvements. Minnesota has all week to tune up. Then on Saturday they will travel to Seattle and face some famaliar faces in Tarvaris Jackson and Sidney Rice.
